With two nonempty sets \(X\), \(Y\) and two fuzzy sets (F-sets in short) \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\) of \(X\) and \(Y\), respectively, the authors define a fuzzy proper mapping from \(\lambda\) to \(\mu\) to be an F-set \(H\) of \(X\times Y\) with certain properties; the concept of this mapping is generalized and studied. Subsequently, the authors start with a fuzzy topology \(\delta\) on a fuzzy set, the category FUZZY-TOP where the objects are fts \((\lambda,\delta)\) and the morphisms are fuzzy continuous proper mappings defined suitably. It is proved that the product \(\sigma\times\rho\) of two fuzzy closed sets \(\sigma\) and \(\rho\) of fts's \((\lambda,\delta)\) and \((\mu,\gamma)\), respectively, need not be a fuzzy closed set of a fts (\(\lambda\times \mu\), \(\delta\times \gamma\)). However, if \(\sigma\) and \(\rho\) are maximal fuzzy closed sets of \((\lambda,\delta)\) and \((\mu,\gamma)\), respectively, it is proved that their product \(\sigma\times\rho\) is a fuzzy closed set. Many basic results of a maximal fuzzy set are also obtained.
