This paper is devoted to the study of the energy functional \[ E_\varepsilon (u,B)=p^{-1}\int_B| \nabla u| ^p\,dx+ (2\varepsilon^p)^{-1}\int_Bu_3^2\,dx, \] where \(B\) is the open unit ball in \(\mathbb R^2\), \(p>2\), and \(\varepsilon>0\), and \(u:B\rightarrow \mathbb S^2\). The main result of this paper establishes the \(W^{1,p}\) convergence of radial minimizers \(u_\varepsilon =(u_{\varepsilon\, 1},u_{\varepsilon\, 2}, u_{\varepsilon\, 3})\) of \(E_\varepsilon\) as \(\varepsilon\rightarrow 0\). There are also located the zeros of \(u_{\varepsilon\, 1}^2+u_{\varepsilon\, 2}^2\) and there are deduced estimates of the convergence rate of \(u_{\varepsilon\, 3}^2\).
