A family of sets \({\mathcal A}\subseteq [X]^{| X| }\) is said to be almost disjoint if for all distinct \(A,B\in\mathcal A\), \(| A\cap B| <| X| \). Let \(\mathbb A\mathbb D(\mathfrak c)\) denote the set of cardinals \(\kappa>\mathfrak c\) for which there exists a family of \(\kappa\) almost disjoint subsets of \(\mathbb R\) and let \(\Gamma\) (respectively, \(\Delta\)) denote the class of separable metrizable spaces for which there exists an almost disjoint family of \(\kappa\) non-trivial connected (respectively, connected and locally connected) subsets for each \(\kappa \in {\mathbb A}{\mathbb D}({\mathfrak c})\). This paper addresses the question of which spaces belong to \(\Gamma\) and \(\Delta\). Typical of the results are the following: 1) If \(n\geq 2\), then \(\mathbb R^{n}\in\Delta\), 2) If \(X\) is compact and dim \(X\geq 2\), then \(X\in\Gamma\), and 3) If \(X\) is a continuum with a point \(p\) such that \(X\setminus \{p\}\) has uncountably many components, then \(X\in\Gamma\). An example is given to show that there is a rational continuum in \(\Gamma\).
