The paper introduces two classes of mappings on \(\mathbb R^n\) called finite metric distortion (FMD) and finite length distortion (FLD). A mapping \(f\) is in FMD if it has the Lusin \((N)\)-property and \[ 0 < l(x, f) \leq L(x, f) < \infty \quad \text{a.e.} \] FLD is a subclass of FMD which in particular contains all non-constant quasiregular mappings. Some basic properties of these classes are given, and results about uniqueness, equicontinuity, boundary behaviour and removability of singularities are obtained. We state here only a few examples of these results. A mapping is in FMD if and only if it is differentiable a.e., and has the \((N)\)- and \((N^{-1})\)-properties. Every homeomorphism of finite distortion with inner dilatation \(K_I \in L^1_{\text{loc}}\) is in FLD. Two discrete and open mappings in FLD with a.e.\ equal dilatation tensors are the same up to Möbius transformations.
