The aim of the present paper is to enlarge the abstract framework of \textit{J. A. Ball, I. Gohberg} and \textit{M. A. Kaashoek}'s paper [Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 87, 17--60 (1996; Zbl 0863.47012)], so as to include the Nehari-Takagi problem as a special case. This abstract setting applies to transfer functions of multi-input multi-output systems, possibly of infinite dimensions, as well as to time varying finite-dimensional systems. The paper has six sections, the first two including an introduction in the topic and the abstract setting of the problem. Section 3 contains the statement of the strictly contractive extension problem of Nehari-Takagi type in this abstract setting, and the assertion of the main theorem. Based on some properties of linear fractional maps, presented in the fourth section, in Section 5 the proof of the main theorem is given. In the last section, the main theorem is illustrated with two concrete examples, namely the Nehari-Takagi problem for a class of time invariant infinite-dimensional systems, and the Nehari-Takagi problem for a class of time varying finite-dimensional linear systems.
