During the last decade, three topological criteria for detecting chaos were developed: the Conley index criterion, the fixed-point criterion, and a criterion [\textit{R. Srzednicki} and \textit{K. Wójcik}, J. Differ. Equations 135, 66--82 (1997; Zbl 0873.58049)] which is based on the so-called isolating segments to compute the fixed-point index of a Poincaré map of a flow from geometric features of an isolating block of the flow. Since it is difficult to construct analytically the isolating segments for a given system of differential equations, the authors present a possible analog of the third topological criterion in discrete dynamical systems.
