A Banach space \(X\) is called a Grothendieck space if any weak\(^\ast\) convergent sequence in its dual space \(X^\ast\) is weakly convergent. The method of \textit{Q.~Bu} and \textit{J.~Diestel} [Quaest.\ Math.\ 24, 519--533 (2001; Zbl 1038.46061)], \textit{Q.~Bu} [ibid.\ 25, 209--227 (2002; Zbl 1038.46060)], and \textit{Q.~Bu} and \textit{P.~N.\ Dowling} [ibid.\ 25, 303--310 (2002; Zbl 1038.46062)], giving a sequential representation of the projective tensor product \(L_p(0,1)\hat\otimes X, 1<p<\infty\), is developed further to prove that \(L_p(0,1)\hat\otimes X\) (respectively, the injective tensor product \(L_p(0,1)\check\otimes X\)), \(1<p<\infty\), is a Grothendieck space if and only if \(X\) is a Grothendieck space and each bounded linear operator from \(L_p(0,1)\) to \(X^\ast\) (respectively, from \(L_q(0,1)\) to \(X^{\ast\ast}\)) is compact, where \(1/p+1/q=1\). Concerning the projective tensor product, let us mention previous more general results due to \textit{G.~Emmanuele} [``About certain isomorphic properties of Banach spaces in projective tensor products'', Extr.\ Math.\ 5, No.~1, 23--25 (1990)], namely, \(X \hat\otimes Y\) is a Grothendieck space whenever \(X\) is reflexive, \(Y\) is a Grothendieck space, and each bounded linear operator from \(X\) to \(Y^\ast\) is compact. Moreover,, if \(X \hat\otimes Y\) is a Grothendieck space and \(X^\ast\) has the bounded compact approximation property, then each bounded linear operator from \(X\) to \(Y^\ast\) is compact [\textit{G.~Emmanuele}, Arch.\ Math., Brno 34, 417--425 (1998; Zbl 0970.46011)].
