Let \(M\) be a compact \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold which is isometrically immersed into an ambient manifold \(\overline M\). The Jacobi operator \(J\) is a second order elliptic operator of Laplace type which is associated with this structure; it appears in the formula for the second variation of the area function of a compact minimal submanifold. Let spec\((M,J)\) be the collection of eigenvalues, repeated according to multiplicity. One can expand the heat trace \[ \text{Tr}_{L^2}\{e^{-tJ}\}\sim \sum_{j\geq0} a_j(J)t^{(j-n)/2}. \] The coefficients \(a_j(J)\) are locally computable spectrally determined invariants. The author deals with the case that \(M\) is an \(n\)-dimensional totally real submanifold of quaternionic projective space \(Q\mathbb{P}^n\) and expresses the invariants \(a_0\), \(a_2\), and \(a_4\) in terms of geometric data of the immersion. Various geometric consequences are then derived; for example, the author shows: Theorem: (1) Each compact \(n\) dimensional totally real parallel Einstein submanifold \(M_0\) of \(Q\mathbb{P}^n(c)\) is uniquely determined by the pair of Riemannian curvature invariants \((\tau,| R| ^2)\). (2) Let \(M\) be an \(n\) dimensional compact totally real minimal submanifold of \(Q\mathbb{P}^n(c)\). Assume that one has \(\text{spec}(M,J)= \text{spec}(M_0,J)\) for \(5<n\leq 17\). Then \(M\) is isometric to \(M_0\). A number of other geometric results of a similar nature are also derived.
