The aim of the present paper is to prove the estimate \[ \int_{{\mathbb R}^n} f_1(\pi_1(x))\cdots f_n(\pi_n(x))\, a(x)dx\leq C\| f_1\| _{n-1}\cdots\| f_n\| _{n-1}, \] where \(\pi_j:{\mathbb R}^n\to {\mathbb R}^{n-1}\) are smooth submersions in a neighbourhood of a point \(x_0\) such that the linear span of the kernels of \(d\pi_j(x_0)\) is \({\mathbb R}^n\), and \(a\) is any cut-off function supported in a small neighbourhood of \(x_0\). This is a local extension of the classical Loomis-Whitney inequality, which is global and refers to \(\pi_j(x)=(x_1,\ldots,\widehat x_j,\ldots,x_n)\). In fact, the authors prove a stronger result, which is a uniform version of the above estimate, that allows them to give an application to the restriction theory of the Fourier transform. An application to certain bilinear Radon-like transforms in the plane is also included.
