The original Novikov conjecture concerns the homotopy invariance of higher signatures and is equivalent to the rational injectivity of the assembly map in \(L\)-theory, \(H_*(B\Gamma,\mathbb L_\bullet(\mathbb Z))\to L_*(\mathbb[\Gamma])\), where \(B\Gamma\) is the classifying space of a discrete group \(\Gamma\), \(\mathbb L_\bullet(\mathbb Z)\) is the algebraic surgery spectrum and \(L_*(\mathbb Z[\Gamma])\) is the \(L\)-group of the group ring \(\mathbb Z[\Gamma]\). There are also similar assembly maps in algebraic and operator \(K\)-theory. The integral injectivity of the assembly map is called the integral Novikov conjecture in the corresponding theory. It was shown recently [\textit{A. Bartels}, K-Theory 28, 19-37 (2003; Zbl 1036.19002)] that the integral Novikov conjecture in \(K\)- and \(L\)-theory holds for any finitely generated group of finite asymptotic dimension with finite CW complex as its classifying space. The author uses an estimate on asymptotic dimension to show that Bartel's result implies the integral Novikov conjecture for torsion-free arithmetic subgroups of linear algebraic groups.
