The authors study the title problem by considering a particle moving on a smooth ring and interactint with a harmonic oscillator. The authors use this system as a model for studying chaos and the onset of chaos. They claim the model has similarities but yet distinct advantages over standard models such as the kicked rotor, the Fermi accelerator, billiards, and the spring-pendulum. The authors show that under certain conditions there exists a mixed phase space with two regions: 1) where the motion is completely chaotic, and 2) where the motion is completely integrable. The paper is primarily theoretical. It could be of interest and use to dynamicists concerned with chaotic/complex systems and their control.
