In connection with the process of cooling down of a glass, one intends to study and optimize temperature profiles by means of optimal control techniques. The glass cooling has been modelled by a mixed problem for a dimensionless system consisting of a heat equation for the scaled temperature \(T(x , t)\) and a transport equation for the scaled intensity \(I(x ,t ,v ,s)\). For a so-called SP1 approximation of the model, one states a boundary optimal control problem by means of which one wants to reach a desired profile by controlling temperature \(T\) with the ambient temperature \(u(t)\) at the boundary. Weak formulation of the model is considered and the optimality condition is obtained in form of a variational inequality. An algorithm based on project gradient for solving the discretized form of the optimality system is proposed. Numerical results from computer experiments for a two dimensional cooling glass problem are shown. In the article not all steps are clearly justified, some important references are just ``submitted'' papers.
