For a module \(M=A\oplus B\), \(A\) is said to be: (i) \(B\)-co-ojective if for any supplement \(P\) of \(B\), \(M\) decomposes as \(M=P\oplus A'\oplus B'\) for some submodules \(A'\) of \(A\) and \(B'\) of \(B\); (ii) \(B\)-co-jective if any supplement \(P\) of \(B\) is a direct summand of \(M\). The authors introduce the above notions, which allow to establish properties on direct sums of (weakly) lifting modules relying only on the properties of the summands. A module \(M\) is called weakly lifting if every submodule of \(M\) has a supplement and every supplement is a direct summand. For \(M=A\oplus B\) with \(A\) and \(B\) lifting modules, it is shown that \(M\) is weakly lifting if and only if \(A\) and \(B\) are mutually co-jective, and \(M\) is weakly lifting and the decomposition is exchangeable if and only if \(A\) and \(B\) are mutually co-ojective. The precise dual of ojectivity is also introduced and related properties are established.
