The main result of the paper offers the complete solution of the functional equation \[ L_f(x,y)+L_g(x,y)=x+y \qquad (x,y\in I), \] where \(f,g:I\to{\mathbb R}\) are continuous strictly monotone functions on the interval \(I\) and \(L_f\) denotes the two-variable Lagrangean mean obtained in terms of the generating function \(f\). The importance of the above functional equation lies in the fact that it expresses that the Gauss composition of the two Lagrangean means \(L_f\) and \(L_g\) equals the arithmetic mean.
