Surfaces \(S\) of general type with \(p_g=q=1\) and \(K^2=3\) were studied by \textit{F. Catanese} and \textit{C. Ciliberto} [in: Problems in the theory of surfaces and their classification, Cortona 1988, Symp. Math. 32, 49--79 (1991; Zbl 0828.14024); J. Algebr. Geom. 2, No.~3, 389--411 (1993; Zbl 0791.14015)]. Among other things they showed that for these surfaces the Albanese pencil has either genus 2 or genus 3 and described very explicitely the moduli space \(\mathcal{M}\) of the surfaces with Albanese fibration of genus 3. This was done by giving an explicit description of the canonical model of these surfaces as elements of a linear system \(| \mathcal{D}| \) in the symmetric product \(E(3)\) of the elliptic curve \(E\) which is the Albanese image of \(S\). Also \textit{Xiao Gang} in his book [Surfaces fibrées en courbes de genre deux. Lect. Notes Math. 1137, (1985; Zbl 0579.14028)] described the subvariety \(\mathcal{M}_2\) of \(\mathcal{M}\) of these surfaces containing a rational pencil of genus \(2\) curves. The paper under review contains some of the results in the author's Ph.D. thesis. In the first part of the paper some very explicit properties of \(| \mathcal{D}| \) are studied, enabling the author to give an alternative description of the elements in \(\mathcal{M}_2\). In the second and last part of the paper the bicanonical map of surfaces with \(p_g=q=1\) and \(K^2=3\) is studied. It is shown that for elements in a non-empty dense subset of \(\mathcal{M}\) the bicanonical map is birational. It is also shown that for these invariants the bicanonical map never has degree 3.
