For a closed orientable surface \(N\), \textit{V. V. Goryunov} [in: The Arnold-Gelfand mathematical seminars: geometry and singularity theory, ed. By V. I. Arnold, Birkhäuser, pp. 223--255 (1997; Zbl 0887.58007)] showed the existence of a set of local invariants of Vassiliev type for generic maps \(f:N\to \mathbb R^3\), and proved that the space of local invariants is three-dimensional. In the paper under review, by using of the existence of a chess board (black and white) colouring of the complement of the image of the map \(f\) in \(\mathbb R^3\), the author shows how to produce finer invariants which form a six-dimensional space. The author also studies black and white invariants for immersions \(f:N\to \mathbb R^3\), as well as mod 2 invariants, in particular, for immersions of the 2-sphere.
