Consider the Sturm-Liouville problem \[ -y^{\prime \prime }(x,\lambda )+(q(x)-\lambda) y(x,\lambda )=0 \] with separated boundary conditions \[ \cos (\alpha) y(0)+\sin (\alpha )y^{\prime }(0)=0,\qquad \cos (\beta) y(l)+\sin (\beta )y^{\prime }(l)=0. \] The author studies the analytic dependence of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions as functions of \(q.\) To do so, he recast the problem through its characteristic function, namely \(\chi (q,\lambda) =N^{T}(\beta) G(q-\lambda) N(\alpha) \), where \(N\) is a boundary functional and \(G\) is Green's function from the resolvent. He also uses the fact that \(\chi \) is an analytic map \(L^{1}\times \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R} \) and applies the implicit function theorem to compute explicitly the partial derivatives \(\frac{\partial \chi }{\partial q}\) and \(\frac{\partial \chi }{\partial \lambda }.\)
