The author studies elliptic operators on manifolds with simple singularities of the type of isolated conical points or edges. His main goal is to describe how one can define stable homotopy classes of zero-order pseudodifferential operators in that context, and how one can define a reasonable \(K\)-theory for the manifolds under consideration. To establish a classification of elliptic operators by \(K\)-homology, he needs to make constructions analoguous to the ``Atiyah-Singer'' difference construction. As an application he shows how one can understand the obstructions to have the Fredholm property for elliptic operators on manifolds with edges in topological terms.
