Motivated by problems involving bivariate distributions the authors consider the functional equation: \[ G_1 \left( {x+1} \over y \right) + F_1 (y) = G_2 \left( {y+1} \over x \right) + F_2 (x). \] They solve the equation in the case that the four unknown functions are from \(\mathbb{R}_+\) into \( \mathbb{R}\) and also in the case where these functions are defined in the set of positive elements of an ordered field and with values in a uniquely 2-divisible abelian group.
