Collocation methods are known to be a useful method for the numerical solution of a large class of Cauchy singular integral equations on finite intervals. After reviewing the fundamental properties of such methods in a very general setting, the author discusses the non-classical situation where some of the operators involved are not invertible any more. This leads to instability of the collocation method. A regularization technique, based on singular value decompositions, is proposed and investigated that allows to handle this difficult class of problems numerically as well.
