The results of this paper have been inspired by the work of \textit{W. C. Troy} [Electron. J. Differ. Equ. 2001, Conf. 06, 297-301 (2001; Zbl 0979.26011)] who extended the classical inequality due to \textit{P. R. Beesack} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 104, 470-475 (1962; Zbl 0122.30102)]. This paper contains two main results. The first basic result is the following: Let \(R>-1\), \(N\geq 1\), \(B(0,R)\) the Euclidean ball centered at \(0\) of radius \(R\) in the \(N\)-dimensional Euclidean space \({\mathbf R}^N\). Let \(p\in {\mathbf R}\) such that \(p+N\in (0,2)\). Consider \(u\in C^1(\overline{B(0,R)} )\) such that \(u(0)=0\). Then one has \[ \int_{B(0,R)}|x|^p\,|u(x)|\, |\nabla u(x)|\,dx\leq {R\over 2\sqrt{2-p-N} } \int_{B(0,R)}|x|^p\, |\nabla u(x)|^2\,dx, \] where \(\nabla \) is the gradient operator.Ä similar result which is applicable to the case \(p+N>0\) states that \[ \int_{B(0,R)}|x|^p \,|u(x)|\, |\nabla u(x)|\,dx\leq {R^{p+N}\over 2\sqrt{p+N} } \int_{B(0,R)}|x|^{1-N}\, |\nabla u(x)|^2\,dx. \] These two inequalities are shown to be sharp for the case \(p+N=1\), and the sharpness is attained by \(u(x)=|x|\), \(x\in B(0,R)\). The authors have also extended the first result.
