Self--similar \(s\)-sets are the simplest fractals. But up to now, the computation of the Hausdorff measure is still difficult. In particular, if the Hausdorff dimension of the fractals is larger than 1, the computation of the Hausdorff measure remains -- for most fractals -- an open problem. In order to approach this problem, the author establishes some useful relations between Hausdorff measure, upper convex density and (best) \(H^s\)-a.e. covering of \(s\)-sets. These relationships are formulated for (general) \(s\)-sets. Based on these results, a new characterization of \(s\)-straight \(s\)-sets is obtained which is described by \(H^s\)-a.e. coverings. Moreover, the author gives a sufficient and necessary condition under which the upper convex density of a self-similar \(s\)-set at a specified point, namely at the simple-contracting-similarity fixed-point, is less than 1. Finally, these results are applied to some classical fractals of Hausdorff dimension larger than 1, namely to von Koch curve, SierpiĆski gasket and the Cartesian product of two middle-third Cantor sets.
