    Let \(X\) be a 1-connected space and let \(\wedge X\) denote its free loop space. The circle group \(S^1\) acts on \(\wedge X\) by rotation. The associated homotopy orbit space \(\wedge X_{hS^1}\) is the total space in the Borel fibration \(\wedge X\to\wedge X_{hS^1}\to BS^1\). In this paper the authors study two spectral sequences converging to the cohomology groups \(H^*(\wedge X; \mathbb{F}_p)\) and \(H^*(\wedge X_{hS^1}; \mathbb{F}_p)\). Both spectral sequences have their origin in the Bousfield homology spectral sequence which converges, under fortunate circumstances, to the homology of the total space of a cosimplicial space. The \(E_2\)-terms are certain non Abelian-derived functors applied to \(H^*(\wedge X; \mathbb{F}_p)\). If \(X\) is a sphere, the spectral sequences collapse for \(p= 2\).
