Let \(X\) be a Banach space with dual \(X^*\) and let \(T\) be a closed linear operator densely defined on \(X\). The purpose of this paper is to prove the following generalization of a result due to \textit{J.~K.\ Finch} [Pac.\ J.\ Math.\ 94, 297--302 (1981; Zbl 0479.47027)], namely, if \(x \in X\) and \(x^* \in X^*\) are such that \(T\) and \(T^*\) have disjoint local spectra in \(x \in X\) and \(x^* \in X^*\), respectively, with empty interior, then \(x^*(x)=0\).
