The author considers the Boussinesq-Burgers system and the Kawahara-Burgers equation as models for the propagation of bores. Unlike the traditional Boussinesq and Kawahara models, these two models incorporate three effects of nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation, which are essential for bore propagation. Using standard analysis in the phase plane, the existence of travelling wave solutions corresponding to bore-like initial data are established separately for the Boussinesq-Burgers system and the Kawahara-Burgers equation. The nature of the travelling waves, e.g., where dispersion dominates dissipation or when dissipation dominates dispersion, and the limiting behaviors of the travelling wave solutions, when some coefficients go to zero, are mentioned and will be studied in a forthcoming paper.
