Let a measurable function \(p:\Gamma \to [1,+\infty]\) be defined on a simple closed rectifiable curve \(\Gamma\) on the complex plane. Let \(I_p(f)=\int_{\Gamma} | f(t)| ^{p(t)} \,dt\). All measurable functions \(f\) on \(\Gamma\) such that \(I_p(\lambda f)<\infty\) for some \(\lambda = \lambda(f)>0\) form a Banach space with the norm \(\|f\|_{p(.)}= \inf \{\lambda >0: I_p(f/\lambda) \leq 1\}\). The authors develop the theory of the Cauchy--type integral and the \(\mathbb{C}\)-linear conjugation problem \(\Phi^+(t) = G(t) \Phi^-(t)+g(t)\), \(t \in \Gamma\), in the space \(L_{p(.)}(\Gamma)\). As an application the authors derive some extension of the Szegö-Helson theorem to the case of variable exponents.
