For a smooth map from a closed surface to the two-dimensional plane, its critical value set is called the apparent contour. The first-order local Vassiliev-type invariants [\textit{V. A. Vasil'ev}, Adv. Sov. Math. 1, 23--69 (1990; Zbl 0727.57008)] of generic apparent contours are studied and a geometrical interpretation given.
