This paper is concerned by parallel discretization methods for symmetric elliptic problems. These problems are defined on domains which are split into a fixed number of nonoverlaping subdomains ; each subdomain is meshed independently, so that nonmatching grids are obtained. The authors study an interior penalty finite element approximation which leads to a symmetric algebraic problem with optimal conditioning. They improve previous results on the subject and get almost optimal error estimates. In this way, they introduce a mixed formulation of the penalty problem and they derive a priori error estimate for its solution. This theoretical study is illustrated by numerical experiments on two model examples.
