Let \((R, m)\) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. Then \(R\) has bounded (finite) Cohen-Macaulay type if there is a bound on the multiplicities (exist only finitely many isomorphism classes) of the indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. The authors prove the following analogue, for bounded CM type, of a result due to \textit{R.-O. Buchweitz}, \textit{G.-M. Greuel} and \textit{F.-O. Schreyer} [Invent. Math. 88, 165--182 (1987; Zbl 0617.14034)] and \textit{H. Knörrer} [Invent. Math. 88, 153--164 (1987; Zbl 0617.14033)] concerning the finite CM type. Let \(K\) be a field of characteristic \(\neq 2\), and let \(R= K[[X_1,\dots, X_d]]/(f)\), where \(d\geq 2\) and \(f\neq 0\) is a non-unit in \(K[[X_1,\dots, X_d]]\). Then \(R\) has bounded CM type if and only if \(R\cong K[[X_1,\dots, X_d]]/(g+ X^2_2+\cdots+ x^2_d)\) for some \(g\in K[[X_0, X_1]]\) such that \(K[[X_0,X_1]]/(g)\) has bounded CM type. We quote a further result which characterizes the rings \(S= K[[X_0, X_1]]/(g)\) with bounded CM type. If \(S\) is reduced, then \(S\) has bounded CM type if and only if \(S\) has finite CM type. If \(S\) is not reduced, then \(S\) has infinite CM type and \(S\) has bounded CM type if and only if either \(S\cong K[[X_0, X_1]]/(X^2_1)\) or \(S\cong K[[X_0, X_1]]/(X_0 X^2_1)\).
