The authors are concerned with local error bounds for the SUPG (streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin) method without crosswind diffusion applied to some linear singularly perturbed evolutionary boundary value problems. In the first instance, they thoroughly review the steady case providing local error bounds for the general order finite elements. Then, for the evolutionary case, such bounds are carried out when the SUPG method is applied along with the implicit Euler scheme. By means of energy arguments local error bounds are obtained in the standard norm. The dependence of the stabilization parameter on the time step is the main inconvenience of this result. Eventually, based on some numerical experiments, the authors show that the above dependence is in fact not necessary in order to obtain local error estimates for the SUPG applied to evolutionary case.
