The main result of this paper is a lower bound for nonvanishing linear combinations with algebraic coefficients of logarithms of algebraic points on a commutative algebraic group over the field of algebraic numbers. The author announced such results in [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 333, No. 12, 1059--1064 (2001; Zbl 1007.11047)]. He provides here complete proofs of refined estimates. His results improve all earlier such estimates, apart from the fact that he did not compute explicitly the constants depending on the algebraic group and its embedding in a projective space. The new estimate of the author solves one of the outstanding open problems in Diophantine Approximation, since it is optimal in terms of the height of the coefficients of the linear combination. Such an optimal result was known only for special cases, namely linear groups and elliptic curves. The proof rests on Baker's method, Hirata's reduction as well as a new arithmetic argument using Chudnovskii's process of variable change.
