The author states and proves the correct translation of the classical Riemann existence theorem in the set-up of \(p\)-adic geometry of characteristic zero, where Mumford curves over finite extensions of \(\mathbb Q_p\) are the analogues of Riemann surfaces. The relevant theorem is the following Theorem. Every finite group \(G\) is the Galois group of a cover \(X \to \mathbb P^1\) with a Mumford curve \(X\) of genus \(g\geq 2\). The cover is constructed by glueing together in a suitable way Mumford orbifolds, that is covers of Mumford curves by Mumford curves by means of morphisms to which one associates certain graphs of groups (called \(*\)-graphs) which encode the ramification behavior of the maps. The author introduces the new notion of \(*\)-graph of a cover generalizing that of \(*\)-tree previously studied by F. Kato. Using the theory of \(*\)-graphs, the above theorem is further generalized as follows Theorem. For every Mumford curve \(S\) of genus \(g\), every finite group \(G\) is the Galois group of a cover \(X \overset{G}{\to} S\) with a Mumford curve \(X\). Theorem. Every finite group is isomorphic to the full automorphism group of a Mumford curve.
