An isometric immersion \(f:M \rightarrow \widetilde{M}\) is called a planar geodesic immersion if the image of each geodesic in \(M\) is a plane curve, namely it is contained in a 2-dimensional totally geodesic submanifold of \(\widetilde{M}\). It was shown by \textit{K. Sakamoto} [Tohoku Math. J. (2) 29, 25--56 (1977; Zbl 0357.53035)] that if \(\widetilde{M}\) is a real space form, a planar geodesic immersion is totally umbilical or locally congruent to one of the parallel immersions of compact Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one. In the paper under review the author is interested in the same question if \(M\) is a real hypersurface of a non flat complex space form. However, as there are no umbilical hypersurfaces of such a manifold, it is necessary to weaken the condition. It turns out that the right condition to investigate is that all the geodesics which are orthogonal to the characteristic vector field (which is obtained as \(JN\), where \(N\) is the unit normal of the immersion) are planar.
