Let \(F(n)=U(n)/T\), with \(n\geq2\) be the classical flag manifold. If \(b=T\) stands for the origin in \(F(n)\), the tangent space at \(b\) identifies naturally with the subspace \({\mathbf q}\subset{\mathbf u}(n)\) spanned by \(A_{jk}=E_{jk}-E_{kj}\) and \(S_{jk}=i(E_{jk}+E_{kj})\). Here \(E_{jk}\) is the matrix with \(1\) in entry \(jk\) and zeroes otherwise. An \(f\)-structure on \(F(n)\) is a section \(\mathcal F\) of the bundle End\((TF(n))\) which satisfies \({\mathcal F}^3+{\mathcal F}=0\). \(\mathcal F\) extends uniquely to an endomorphism \({\mathcal F}:{\mathbf q}^{\mathbf C}\to{\mathbf q}^{\mathbf C}\) which is diagonalizable with eigenvalues \(i,0,-i\). Let \({\mathbf q}^+,{\mathbf q}^0,{\mathbf q}^-\) be the correspondent eigenspaces. We say that \((F(n),{\mathcal F},ds^2)\) is \((1,2)\)-symplectic if \(\nabla {\mathcal F})(X,Y)=0\) whenever \(X\in{\mathbf q}^+\) and \(Y\in{\mathbf q}^-\), assuming \(ds^2\) is an invariant metric on \(F(n)\). The authors characterize the invariant \(f\)-structures \(\mathcal F\) on \((F(n),{\mathcal F},ds^2)\). This provides a sufficient condition for the existence of \(\mathcal F\)-harmonic maps from any cosymplectic Riemannian manifold onto \(F(n)\). In the special case of almost complex structures, this analysis extends and unifies two known approaches: on locally transitive digraphs and conefree digraphs. The authors also discuss the construction of \((1,2)\)-symplectic metrics and calculate their dimension.
