The author proves the following theorem: Any continuous action of \(\text{SL}(n, \mathbb{Z})\), where \(n>2\), on an \(r\)-dimensional mod 2 homology sphere factors through a finite group action if \(r < n-1\). To prove the theorem he shows the existence of an element \(g\) of \(\text{SL}(n, \mathbb{Z})\) such that \(g\) is a noncentral element of order \(2\) and acts trivially, by using a classical result on finite group actions on a homology sphere. He also proves that any continuous action of \(\text{SL}(n, \mathbb{Z})\) on \(S^1\), and on \(S^2\), must be trivial if \(n>2\), and if \(n>3\), respectively. Moreover, he conjectures that any continuous action of \(\text{SL}(n, \mathbb{Z})\) on an \(r\)-dimensional mod 2 homology sphere must be trivial if \(r < n-1\).
