Let \(G\subset \text{GL}(V)\) be a finite complex linear group and \(\chi\) a linear character of \(G\). \textit{R. P. Stanley} [J. Algebra 49, 134--148 (1977; Zbl 0383.20029) and Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 1, 475--511 (1979; Zbl 0497.20002)] obtained a criterion for a module \(\text{Sym}(V)_{\chi}\) of relative \(\chi\)-invariants to be a free \(\text{Sym}(V)^G\)-module of rank one. The aim of the present paper is to generalize this result. Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field, \(G\) an affine algebraic group over \(k\), and \(X\) a normal affine \(k\)-variety with a regular \(G\)-action. Assume that the algebra of invariants \(k[X]^{R_u(G)}\) is finitely generated, where \(R_u(G)\) is the unipotent radical of \(G\), and that the field of rational invariants \(k(X)^G\) coincides with the quotient field of the algebra \(k[X]^G\). Then for any \(\chi\in Z^1(G, k[X]^{\times})\) such that \(k[X]_{\chi}\neq\{0\}\), a criterion for the module \(k[X]_{\chi}\) to be a free \(k[X]^G\)-module of rank one is given. In fact, the author studies a more general situation, namely relative invariants of a group \(G\) consisting of automorphisms of a Krull domain. Some applications to actions of finite central extensions of algebraic tori are given.
