The author gives a complete classification of those finite \(2\)-groups which possess exactly three involutions. Partial steps in this direction had been taken by \textit{A. D.~Ustjuzaninov} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 13, 182-197 (1972; Zbl 0252.20017)] and \textit{M. W.~Konvisser} [Math. Z. 130, 19-30 (1973; Zbl 0238.20023)]. The proof requires going through plenty of subtle calculations.
