The author characterizes the Hörmander symbols \(\sigma(x,\xi)\in S_{\rho,\delta}^m\) by their wavelet coefficients. To avoid the difficulties of finding unconditional bases for general symbols in \(S_{\rho,\delta}^m\) by considering their kernel distributions, the symbols are treated directly in the phase space. Since Besov spaces \(B_\infty^{m,\infty}\) admit unconditional bases, one replaces \(S_{\rho,\delta}^m\) by \(\widetilde S_{\rho,\delta}^m\) and writes \(\sigma(x,\xi)\in\widetilde S_{\rho,\delta}^m\) if \(| | \partial_\xi^\beta \sigma(x,\xi)| | _{B_\infty}^{\alpha,\infty} \leq C_{\alpha,\beta}(1+| \xi| )^{m-\rho | \beta| +\delta\alpha}\) for all \(\alpha\in \mathbb N\) and \(\beta\in \mathbb N^n\). More general results are obtained for symbols and kernel-distribution for some symbols in the class \(S_{1,\delta}^m\) and a precise Huygen's principle (that is, a precise micro-analysis) is used to establish new sharp results on the \(L^p\) continuity of operators for \(1\leq p \leq \infty\).
