The local behaviour of solutions of the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equations is studied with particular attention being paid to the determination of uniform gradient estimates for smooth solutions and also to the regularity of weak solutions. The estimates show the velocity field plays a more dominant role than does the magnetic field in the study of the regularity. A corollary of the analysis is the derivation of estimates of the Hausdorff dimension based on the possible singular set of suitable weak solutions, as in the case of a pure fluid. Various regularity results are also found by considering the consequences of the blowup estimates that are obtained.
