Let \(D\) be the Dirac operator on a compact spin manifold \(M\) of dimension \(m\). The author shows that it is possible to prescribe a finite part of the spectrum of the Dirac operator as eigenvalues with simple multiplicities with the exception of the zero eigenvalue modulo the requirement that the spectrum be symmetric about the origin if \(m\) is not congruent to \(3\) mod \(4\). The author constructs metrics on the sphere for which the spectrum in a given interval consists of a single eigenvalue. A connected sum of \(M\) with a finite number of spheres is then taken and the surgery theorem of \textit{C. Bär} and \textit{M. Dahl} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 552, 53--76 (2002; Zbl 1017.58019)] is applied.
