A group \(\Gamma\) is called `large' if \(\Gamma\) has a finite index subgroup projecting onto \(F_2\), the free group of rank 2. For a group \(\Gamma\) denote by \(s_n(\Gamma)\) the number of subgroups of index \(n\) in \(\Gamma\). In this paper various examples for estimates of \(s_n(\Gamma)\) for large groups \(\Gamma\) are given. The authors study for example the function \[ l(\Gamma):=\lim_{n\to\infty}\tfrac{s_n(\Gamma_d)}{s_n(F_{d-1})} \] where \(\Gamma_d\) is a \(d\)-generator one-relator group. A class of examples is presented where \(l(\Gamma)\) is infinite. The authors also present other examples concerning the subgroup growth of large groups.
