A new method of extension of a (piecewise) polynomial surface across its piecewise smooth boundary is presented in this article. The extended part of the surface satisfies both of the conditions of \(C^1\) or \(C^2\) continuity along old boundary and special geometric conditions which can be imposed on the new boundary. The extension lies in the construction of a set of quadratic (for \(C^1\) continuity) or cubic (for \(C^2\) continuity) nonuniform spline curves constructed at each point of the piecewise smooth boundary. The shape and geometrical properties of the extended surface is dependent on two parameters: The extension parameter affects the length of the extended part and the control parameter is associated with intrinsic nonuniform properties of the spline curves. The normal curvature of the extended surface can be controlled by means of these two parameters and the bound of the normal curvature can be estimated on the basis of the convex hull property of Bézier curves. An example of an extension of a smooth surface with a circular and rectangular boundary is given. It is shown that the suggested method overcomes the undesirable wiggles and overshoots which can arise on the extended part when using the polynomial equation of the surface for a larger domain of parameters.
