Let \(X\) be a real or complex Banach space with a Schauder basis \((e_n)_{n\in\mathbb {N}}\). Let \(\widehat{\bigotimes}^n_\mu X\) denote the (completed) \(n\)-fold tensor product of \(X\) endowed with a symmetric uniform crossnorm \(\mu\). The authors define a new square ordering on \(\mathbb {N}^n\) and prove that the sequence \((e_{\alpha_1}\otimes \dots \otimes e_{\alpha_n})_{(\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_n)\in\mathbb {N}^n}\) with this ordering is a Schauder basis for the \(n\)-fold tensor product \(\widehat{\bigotimes}^n_\mu X\). The proof also gives an estimate of the basis constant. From this result, the authors deduce that also the \(n\)-fold symmetric tensor product \(\widehat{\bigotimes}^n_{\mu, s} X\) has a Schauder basis, with the same estimate of the basis constant. In the particular case when \(n=2\), the order is (1,1), (1,2), (2,1), (2,2), (1,3), (3,1), (2,3), (3,2), (3,3), \dots , which is a modification of the classical square ordering introduced by \textit{B. R. Gelbaum} and \textit{J. Gil de Lamadrid} [Pac. J. Math. 11, 1281--1286 (1961; Zbl 0106.08604)], and the estimate of the basis constant coincides with the Gelbaum-Gil de Lamadrid estimate.
