    The primitive equations (PEs) of the ocean and the atmosphere are fundamental equations of geophysical fluid mechanics. In this paper the linearized PEs with vanishing viscosity are studied. New boundary conditions (of transparent type) are introduced in the context of a modal expansion of the solution which consists of an infinite sequence of integral equations. In order to establish existence and uniqueness of solutions the linear semigroup theory is applied. The case with nonhomogeneous boundary values which is important in numerical simulations in limited domains is also considered.
