This paper studies cubic rational maps of the form \(z\mapsto z^2+\lambda/z\) and their dependence on the complex parameter \(\lambda\). The main result is a description of the Julia set depending on the dynamics of the critical values: the Julia set is either a Cantor set with dynamics conjugate to a shift map on three symbols, or the Julia set is connected and there are infinitely many Fatou components. The paper provides sufficient conditions when the Julia set is a Sierpinski curve: this is a universal planar set that contains a homeomorphic copy of any planar one-dimensional continuum. It is shown that, even though all Sierpinski curves are homeomorphic, for certain parameters the dynamics on them is not conjugate. The essential results and methods extend to maps such as \(z\mapsto z^{2n}+\lambda/z^{2d+1}\).
