A generalized Witten manifold is the orbit space of an action of \( S^{1}\) on \(S^{5}\times \) \(S^{3}\) defined by \((z,(u_{1},u_{2},u_{3}),(v_{1},v_{2}))\in S^1\times S^5\times S^3 \to ((z^{k}u_{1},z^{k}u_{2},z^{k}u_{3}),(z^{j1}v_{1},z^{j2}v_{2}))\in S^5\times S^3\) with \(k\) relatively prime to \(j_{1}\) and \(j_{2}\). These manifolds are classified up to homeomorphism and diffeomorphism. The approach uses a modified surgery theory suggested by Julius Shaneson. One considers normal maps into a topological model space which is not a Poincaré duality space.
