Let \((X,J)\) be an \(n\)--dimensional almost complex manifold. An upper semicontinuous function \(f:X\to[-\infty,+\infty)\) is said to be \textit{\(J\)-plurisubharmonic} (\(f\in\mathcal{PSH}(X,J)\)) if for every \(J\)-holomorphic disc \(\varphi:\varDelta\to X\), the function \(f\circ\varphi\) is subharmonic in the unit disc \(\varDelta\). The author shows that if \(f\in\mathcal{PSH}(X,J)\cap L^1_{\text{loc}}(X)\), then the \((1,1)\)-current \(i\partial_J\overline\partial_Jf\) is positive. He studies the converse of the above implication and formulates the following conjecture. Let \(u\in\mathcal D'_{2n}(\mathbb R)(X)\) be a real distribution such that the \((1,1)\)-current \(i\partial_J\overline\partial_Jf\) is positive. Then there exists an \(f\in\mathcal{PSH}(X,J)\cap L^1_{\text{loc}}(X)\) such that \(f=u\) in the distribution sense. The conjecture is elementary in the case where \(u\in\mathcal C^2(X)\). Moreover, it is known that the conjecture is true in the case where the structure of \((X,J)\) is integrable [\textit{J.-P. Demailly}, Aspects Math. E 26, 105--126 (1994; Zbl 0824.53064)]. The author proves that the conjecture is true also in the following case. If \(f:X\to[-\infty,+\infty)\) is an upper semicontinuous function such that \(f\in L^1_{\text{loc}}(X)\), \(f\) is continuous on \(X\setminus f^{-1}(-\infty)\), and \(i\partial_J\overline\partial_Jf\) is positive, then \(f\in\mathcal{PSH}(X,J)\).
