    Let \(X\) be a reflexive real Banach space with dual \(X^*\) and \(K\) a subspace of \(X\). Let \(A:X\to X^*\) be a coercive continuous linear mapping and \(g:K\to 2^{X^*}\) a set-contractive upper semicontinuous multivalued mapping with nonempty compact convex values. The authors show that, under certain conditions on \(g\), the variational inequality \[ (Au, v-u) \geq (w, v-u)\quad \text{for all}\;v\in K \] has a nontrivial solution \(u\) in \(K\). The method of proof is to use an index theory for condensing upper semicontinuous multivalued mappings due to \textit{P. M. Fitzpatrick} and \textit{W. V. Petryshyn} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 12, 75--85 (1975; Zbl 0329.47022)]. Moreover, the case when \(A\) is monotone is also discussed.
