On a subalgebra of the centre of a group ring. (Q2576988)

Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\) and \(G\) a finite group. The author considers the \(F\)-subspace \(Z_{p'}\) of the center \(Z(FG)\) of the group algebra \(FG\) spanned by the class sums of all \(p\)-regular conjugacy classes of \(G\). Motivated by an earlier paper by \textit{J. Murray} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 34, No. 2, 155-164 (2002; Zbl 1031.20004)], the author proves that \(Z_{p'}\) is a subalgebra of \(Z(FG)\) if \(G\) has Abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroups. A similar result holds if \(p\) is odd and \(G\) has metacyclic Sylow \(p\)-subgroups.
