The paper presents a study for two-dimensional transient electromagnetic scattering problems in inhomogeneous Lipschitz cavities embedded in the infinite ground plane. The initial equations that describe the problem (obtained with the help of the Maxwell's equations) are discretized in time by the Newmark time-stepping scheme, leading therefore to corresponding semi-discrete problems in an infinite domain. The problems are analyzed in \(H^1\) weak formulation, and for obtaining the uniqueness of solutions the main steps are based on the use of a natural pseudodifferential operator (of order one), the Lax-Milgram Theorem and the Céa's Lemma. A finite element error analysis is performed, and the corresponding error solutions are obtained in both the \(L^2\) and \(H^1\) norms. Stability conditions are presented for the Newmark time-stepping scheme. Additionally, numerical results for filled and unfilled rectangular cavities are worked out in view of the accuracy of the scheme.
